Muesli

My first experience tasting müesli; I remember it like it was yesterday. I was traveling throughout Europe at the time and was staying at a cute little hostel right in the heart of Vienna. Well, perhaps cute isn’t the best descriptor…more like chic, sleek and modern! It was like no other hostel I had ever stayed in and was extremely clean. Felt more like a hotel really. In any case, back to the müesli. So, I woke up on my first morning in Vienna all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and headed downstairs to the cafeteria where a beautiful breakfast spread awaited me. I always love a healthy cereal, so when I saw this dry “oatmeal” looking mixture, I loaded up my bowl and filled it with milk…hmmm…milk was NOT the right choice for me. It tasted dry and soupy…haha…and I just remember thinking, did I do this wrong? Is everyone looking at me funny? In actuality, no one was and looking back it probably wasn’t as bad as I made it out to be. And most people do eat it with milk, so perhaps I’m just weird.
In my research, I learned that traditional müesli used to be eaten with orange juice…oh my…I couldn’t handle that! Reminds me of the time when I was young and accidentally spilled my glass of orange juice in my bowl of mini-wheats. My mum still made me eat it…milk, orange juice and wheat. Ugh. Yes mum, I still hold a grudge against that…and the boiled spinach… Love you though! x
Let’s jump ahead a year later, when I was living in England. I tried my hand at muesli again yet with yoghurt this time. YUM! I got hooked pretty quickly. Brilliant! The food shops practically had an aisle devoted to this wonderful Swiss breakfast cereal. I tried all different kinds and ate it practically every morning. Except for those wet rainy London days where only a ste1 cup whole oat flakes1 cup rye flakes1 cup kamut flakes2/3 cup chopped raw hazelnuts2/3 cup chopped raw almonds1/2 cup dried raisins1/2 cup dried cranberries1/4 cup unsalted sunflower seeds1/4 cup whole flax seedsaming bowl of oatmeal was just a better fit.
Jump ahead again a few years later. Canada. Winnipeg. Supermarket. Two options for müesli! Seriously!? You can imagine my disappointment…sigh…where are all my choices for fabulous müesli! The few they had…overpriced and sitting in the health-food section of the shop. Not pleased to say the least. So what’s the obvious solution to my dilemma? That’s right, take a trip to London to visit all my mates again and stock up! Ok, perhaps not, but what a lovely thought.
Instead, I decided to make my own at home. It’s ridiculously easy, inexpensive and healthy….no added sugar or sodium and you can literally put whatever you want in it. Buying the ingredients in bulk allows you to pick & choose and create your very own müesli recipe.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup whole oat flakes
  • 1 cup rye flakes
  • 1 cup kamut flakes
  • 2/3 cup chopped raw hazelnuts
  • 2/3 cup chopped raw almonds
  • 1/2 cup dried raisins
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries
  • 1/4 cup unsalted sunflower seeds
  • 1/4 cup whole flax seeds

Instructions
 

  • Mix everything together in a large bowl.
  • Done.
  • Easy right?
  • Store in an airtight container and enjoy!
